Mobile phones do a lot more than just handle voice calls these days, and it was only a matter of time before sporty active people were targeted by purveyors of handsets. Sony Ericsson's W710i is not, though, being marketed as a phone to help improve your sporting prowess, more as a phone for people with active lifestyles.
This is just as well, really, because if you are into sport with a specific goal in mind, the W710i isn't going to offer you as much help as dedicated sports tech. Without a heart rate monitor it can't tell how hard you are working, and that is vital if you are in serious training, and also pretty useful if you are just trying to get reasonably fit.
What this phone does do is measure distance travelled and current speed. It does this thanks to a pedometer. You can calibrate this easily enough; just use the phone to measure you travelling over a certain distance then tell it how far you've gone. It takes the number of strides it has counted in conjunction with the distance measurement, and works out your stride length.
You can use the W710i when walking or running, but if you are anything like us your stride length will vary doing either activity. When you run it could vary a lot, especially if you are on rough terrain rather than the pavement. So the pedometer is not going to be hugely accurate.
The phone will also make an attempt to calculate calories burned based on your height, weight and gender. Again, though, it can't give an entirely accurate measurement.
The W710i performs its pedometer functions only when worn on a belt or your arm using the provided attachments. The pedometer resets itself at midnight every night, so it is potentially a useful aid if you are on a mission to walk a set number of steps every day.
This is a clamshell phone, and it is small and tidy when closed, at 88mm tall, 48mm wide and 24.5mm deep, and also light at 101g. The W710i is certainly neat enough in the pocket.
The very large and clear front screen provides various bits of info on sporting progress as well as details of any tunes being played; oh yes, being a Sony Ericsson phone there is a walkman component. For control of music when you are running or otherwise engaged there are some buttons to the left and right of the front screen. There is just 10MB of internal memory for tunes storage but a 512MB Memory Stick Micro for more is supplied with the phone.
We've concentrated on the sporty aspects of this handset, but it is quite an all-rounder. Quad-band with a 2.0-megapixel camera, FM radio with a two-piece headset so you can use headphones with a 3.5mm jack, and the usual range of calendar, to do list, e-mail, SMS, Web browsing, and RSS reader type utilities.
